Armstrong partnered with American vocalist Adelaide Hall to lay the foundation for scat singing as a bulwark of the art of Vocal jazz. Vocal music has mainly been performed by a soloist or a very small band of singers. This has evolved through the years; now Vocal jazz ensemble usually consists of a choir of 8-16 singers with a rhythm section (often comprised of a drummer, bassist, guitarist, and pianist.
