Utopia was co-founded by Sherry and her mother, Amy in August 2001. With little experience in the fashion retail business, their concept was simple - to celebrate and share their unique love of Asian ethnic wear.

Beginnings were humbling when they operated from a tiny store in Bugis Village Market, within a non air-conditioned unit in Singapore’s tropical climate. The purple eclectic store with the butterfly theme quickly attracted many customers looking for interesting, unique fashion that spoke individuality. Merchandise was personally sourced from the region in limited quantities with new arrivals weekly. Customers would wait a few hours at the stores to get first hand pickings of these new arrivals. The little utopia store quickly relocated to a bigger store within Bugis Village Market within 6 months

After a full year of learning period and with boosted confidence, the duo finally launched their utopia label at Far East Plaza Level One in December 2002. Operating from a 170 square feet shop to a young, fashion forward crowd, business was brisk and utopia became one of the favorite haunts for fashionistas, looking for unique in their wardrobe.

In a bid to establish the utopia brand as more of an original label than a multi-label imported boutique, both founders worked on expanding their design line with unusual creations, instead of relying on foreign imports. Their designs celebrate the warm, exotic Asian heritage. Utopia’s designs invoke nostalgia of Singapore’s multi-cultural background, influenced heavily by the the Peranakans, the Indians, the Malays, & the Chinese, amongst others. Tapping inspiration from many different cultures on frequent sourcing trips, utopia’s designs grew to a line of eclectic ethnic styles, inimitable and individualistic.

Utopia later expanded to other shopping hotspots in Singapore like Plaza Singapura, Bussorah Street, Vivocity and Parkway Parade over the 10 year period. Today, utopia has 3 stores in Singapore and is expanding its distribution network overseas. Till date, utopia’s sequin work on traditional batik remained one of the most popular designs. The label is growing every day but the brand essence remains the same. Fusing contemporary, high fashion styles with traditional fabrics and handiwork, Utopia aspires to spread the Asian culture, with modern interpretation.
