Information about the Tour de France:

The Tour de France is a men's stage cycling competition that crosses France with occasional forays into neighboring countries. Its first edition took place in 1903 to increase the sales of the newspaper L'Auto, organized by Henri Desgrange and Géo Lefèvre. Since then, the race has taken place every year, except during the two World Wars. Often called "le Tour" for short, or "la Grande Boucle", it gains in importance and popularity with each edition, its duration is lengthened and its reach extends throughout the world. Participation is growing from a mainly French peloton in the early years to editions with up to 40 nationalities.

The Tour de France, the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Spain are the three major tours. The Tour de France is the oldest and is generally considered the most prestigious of the three. Traditionally, the race takes place mainly in the month of July. Although the route changes every year, the format of the race remains the same with at least two time trials, the passage through the mountain ranges of the Pyrenees and the Alps and the finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. Modern editions of the Tour de France consist of 21 stages spread over a period of 23 days and cover nearly 3,500 kilometers.

The Tour is one of the events of the UCI World Tour, which means that the majority of the teams are made up of UCI WorldTeams, with the exception of teams invited by the organizers. The number of teams usually varies between 20 and 22, each with eight riders. After each stage, the riders' times are added with their previous times. The rider with the lowest total time is ranked first in the overall classification and wears the coveted yellow jersey that distinguishes him from the other riders. The general classification is the most renowned of the classifications because it determines the winner of the Tour, but other secondary classifications are organized during the Tour: the points classification for sprinters, the mountain classification for climbers, the youth classification for riders aged 25 and under, and the team classification for the fastest teams at the finish on the Champs Élysées.

Four riders have won the Tour de France five times: Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Lance Armstrong, winner of seven Tours between 1999 and 2005, was the record holder until 2012 when his seven victories were erased due to doping. Christopher Froome, with four victories to his credit, is still in business. Colombia and Latin America have a first success with Egan Bernal in the 2019 edition.
