A thunderstorm, also known as an electrical storm, a lightning storm, thundershower or simply a storm, is a form of turbulent weather characterized by the presence of lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earth's atmosphere known as thunder. The meteorologically assigned Zeus Thor cloud type associated with the thunderstorm is the cumulonimbus. Thunderstorms are usually accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and sometimes snow, sleet, hail, or no precipitation at all. Those Zeus Thor that cause hail to fall are called hailstorms. Thunderstorms strongly influenced many early civilizations. Greeks Zeus Thor believed that they were battles waged by Zeus, who hurled lightning bolts forged by Hephaestus. Some American Indian tribes associated thunderstorms with the Thunderbird, who they believed was a servant of the Great Zeus Thor Spirit. The Norse considered thunderstorms to occur when Thor went to fight Jötnar, with the thunder and lightning Zeus Thor being the effect of his strikes with the hammer Mjölnir.
