It is a love story, centered around an elderly man reading a book to an ailing woman experiencing Alzheimer's. The story that he shares with her follows the storyline of a young couple, who are the definition of true love. They end up being separated by money, society, war, and years apart. The book also explains how the two characters both react to their reunion after having drastically taken different paths in life and over the course of many years.
Most of the film is set against the quaint southern backdrop of the South Carolina Lowcountry, in Charleston and its surrounding areas. Charleston is not just the setting, however: much of the action was filmed there as well, and many of the sites can still be visited today.
