The author, Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews was an American writer.
This story is about a poor farm family. Mary, the oldest, is a drudge--caring for her siblings and doing much of the work on the farm. In the meantime, her younger sister goes out with boys and has fun. However, Mary holds a secret--she longs to leave the farm and get an education. But, at the end of the story, Mary must abandon or hold off her plans when the horse dies and the family spend this money on a new one.
It is about self-sacrifice and actually is a nice historical portrait of life in 1913 as well as the roles of women at that time. While not the most interesting story of the era, it is worth listening and reasonably well made and realistic.
