Thanksgiving Day in the United States is a holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. It precedes Black Friday. In Canada, it is celebrated in October. Is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a stuffed turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie. This is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have.
The celebration probably derived from the harvest-home ceremonies originally held among the Pilgrims in New England. These were days reserved to thank God for plentiful crops and a bountiful harvest. Accordingly, this holiday still takes place late in the Fall Season, after crops have been gathered. Long before settlers came to the East Coast of the United States, the area was inhabited by many Native American tribes. The native people-Wampanoag people, knew the land well and had fished, hunted, and harvested for thousands of generations. A group of English Protestants who comprised the Plymouth Colony wanted to break away from the Church of England so they set off on a voyage and reached the New World. The native people at that time helped the settlers grow corn and use fish to fertilize their fields. Afterwards, a formal agreement was made between the settlers and the native people and they joined together to protect each other from other tribes, and soon, they were hunting together for the harvest celebration and thanking God for the plentiful crops.
The peace between the Native Americans and settlers lasted for only a generation. The Wampanoag people do not share in the popular reverence for the traditional New England Thanksgiving. For them, the holiday is a reminder of betrayal and bloodshed.
Most recently, Thanksgiving Day in the United States is usually a family affair, complete with sumptuous dinners and happy reunions; however, it is also traditionally a time for serious religious contemplation, church services and prayer.
