Sri Venkataramana Temple is located at Kallianpur village about six km from Udupi of coastal Karnataka state. On the banks of ‘Suvarna’ river enshrines Sri Venkataramana Devaru. This temple has a history of nearly 500 years and is one among the 18 pete devastans belonging to the GSB community. The Simhasana of the Sanctum Sanctorum in the temple has three sections: The upper section contains the main diety of Sri Venkataramana along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The middle section also consists of Sri Venkataramana along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The lower section consists of the Utsav murthi of Lord Gopalakrishna which is generally taken out for pete utsav and other celebrations. In the surroundings of the main diety inside the temple, there are four parivaar dieties of Sri Hanuman, Sri Mahaganapati, Mahalaxmi and Sri Garuda respectively. In the temple, there are three important ganas namely, Kshetra Pala, Agni-bhairava and Drishti gana. More than a decade ago, the Darshan (oracle / Narthana seva) of agni bhairava gana, at the temple had gained nationwide fame where it helped the devotees overcome their difficulties.

The historical incident concerned with the Utsav murthi of Lord Gopalakrishna dates back to around 100 years and still gives adrenaline rush among the devotees. During the annual Deepotsava which is usually held in Karthika mhasa (Karthika Punnava), there is a tradition of taking the temple’s main diety for mriga bhete utsava on a boat in the Suvarana river. On this particular day, during the mriga bhete utsava of the main diety, while the boat was facing eastwards, the boat stopped instantly. The boatman tried to move the boat ahead but it was not able to proceed further. A lot of people came and volunteered to push the boat but the boat failed to move an inch. Finally, the boatman dived into the water to check what was hindering the boat movement. In the center of river suvarna, he found the statue (murthi) of Lord Gopalakrishna in dancing pose, which surprised all the people present there. This murthi of the lord was carried to the temple and after performing the necessary rituals, with the blessings of the main diety, it was decided that this murthi would be used as Utsav murthi for all important celebrations.
