First played in 1896, it was well known to all Koreans in 1910. (At the time, it was not the national anthem, because an imperial anthem was used at that time.) At that time, the Song was usually sung a Scottish folk song, "Auld Lang Syne", as well as occasionally to other music. That year, the Japanese invaded Korea and banned the song.
