Charlene Smith is a multi-award winning writer. Author of 15 books, and contributor to a dozen more, she has written two authorized biographies on Nelson Mandela. She also helped make four television documentaries on Nelson Mandela, two for Canadian Broadcasting, and one of which won awards.
South African-born, she has traveled the world. As a journalist she reported on conflict in southern Africa, south-east Asia and Latin America. She also lived and worked (as a journalist) in Japan and Argentina before settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Charlene has written travel articles for books and newspapers including Lonely Planet, Independent newspapers and others. She has worked in television for CBS 60 Minutes, ABC Nightline, BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, NHK and more. The first woman, and youngest-ever, manager of SAfm, the largest English radio station in South Africa, she was also an assistant editor of South Africa's four biggest business publications.
