Sfantul Gheorghe

Printre Sfinții pe care îi chemăm mai des în rugăciunile noastre se numără, de bună seamă, și Sfântul Mucenic Gheorghe. El a trăit în timpul domniei împăratului păgân Dioclețian, aspru prigonitor al creștinilor din primele veacuri, fiind încă de tânăr comandant în armata Imperiului.

In traditia populara Sfantul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe este cunoscut sub numele de San-George. Este considerat a fi un zeu al vegetatiei, protector al naturii inverzite, al vitelor si al oilor, el fiind identificat in Panteonul romanesc cu Cavalerul Trac.

Dintre toți Sfinții sărbătoriți în lumea creștină, puțini au ajuns la faima de care s-a bucurat, și se bucură, Sfântul Gheorghe, la poporul nostru. În satele și orașele țării noastre, foarte multe biserici sunt ridicate în cinstea lui. Mulți oameni, bărbați si femei, îi poartă numele. De asemenea si multe orașe din țară. Al treilea braț al Dunării, în Deltă, se numește Brațul Sfântului Gheorghe. Se știe, apoi, că multă vreme ocrotitorul oștirii române a fost Sfântul Gheorghe.

Acatistele sunt rugaciuni prin care cerem mai ales mijlocirea Sfintilor pe langa Dumnezeu, spre a ne ajuta sau a ne izbavi la vreme de nevoie si de necaz. Ele nu fac parte din randuiala celor sapte Laude si nici din celelalte slujbe ale sarbatorilor de peste an, ci se citesc la orice vreme, in afara ceasurilor de slujba ale Bisericii, la cererea credinciosilor si pentru feluritele lor nevoi.
