Seductive, sexy, sensuous - enveloped in the sweet innocence and radiance of youth, an Indian bride makes heads turn as, draped in a bridal saree, she makes her way to the pandal. The saree, worn in the Indian subcontinent as well as in all places where the Indian population has migrated, saree is the quintessential traditional attire of an Indian woman; be it a blushing bride, a stately queen, a nubile princess, or a nurturing mother.

With the spread of Indian fashion to foreign shores, the modern Indian saree is being worn by women from all walks of life; models, fashionistas, actresses, brides, politically powerful women, CEOs and the housewife. The five yard piece of cloth is part of a cultural heritage that finds mention in legends as old as the Indian civilization itself. It survived then as it does now, ever evolving, but never losing its basic character - a character that is synonymous with feminine grace, mystique, creativity and beauty.

The saree traditionally epitomizes modesty, purity, and the dignity of being a woman. Made of different materials such as cottons, silks, georgette or synthetics, you will find a wild spectrum from coarse fabrics to unbelievably delicate and diaphanous materials, sober to eclectic, and toned-down to vividly colorful! There is a saree for every mood and every occasion. The choice of saree not only reflects a woman's nature, mood, personality and style, but also provides clues to her social standing and age. It is a garment that can be used to express unspoken commands or secret desires, it can be suggestive or inviting, coldly formal or forbidding; traits that only add to its unique appeal.

Legend says that a fanciful weaver dreamt of women as he deftly worked at his loom. He wove all that he dreamt into the fabric. He thought longingly of a woman's silken tresses, the warm touch of her satin skin, the strength of her beliefs, the softness of her nature, the promise in her eyes and the purity of her innocence. All this and more he wove into the cloth. When it was done, the cloth came to be used as the saree representing all the mystique, mystery and femininity that characterize women.

Worn in different ways by women from different regions, the urban woman has led the way in draping the saree in new creative and innovative ways to be variously seductive or sober, sexy or modest. Traditionally, it is worn over a petticoat which is a long skirt, tied at the waist below the navel with a drawstring. A blouse or choli is worn on the top. The choli can be very elaborately designed, of a sedate traditional cut, or very skimpy depending on the wearer's intent, style statement, or the occasion. The midriff is left tantalizingly bare. The pallu, the portion that freely hangs over the shoulder, is usually the piece de resistance. The ones which are intricately embroidered or patterned are more preferred for formal or festive occasions.
