******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Salsa music is a common term referring to Puerto Rican as well as Cuban popular dance music. Musical genres that comprise Salsa are guaracha, Cuban son montuno, chachachá, mambo, and to some extent bolero. Salsa is the blend of Puerto Rican plena and bomba. In certain cases, Salsa also describes the Colombian cumbia and Dominican merengue.

Salsa means 'sauce' in Spanish, and connotes spiciness which is common in Caribbean as well as Latin cuisine. Salsa obtained a meaning as a musical term in both English and Spanish only in the 20th century. Salsa groups are usually set up in either one of two Cuban instrument formats -- the string-based charanga or the horn-based son conjunto. The common conjunto format is comprised of congas, tres, bass, bongos, piano, a horn section, and then the smaller handheld percussions such as guiro, claves, or maracas. The Cuban horn section is commonly comprised of trumpets, but trombones are also used in salsa.

The traditional charanga format is comprised of piano, timbales, congas, bass, flute, and a string section of violins, cello, and viola. Tipica 73 and Orquesta Broadway were two of the most popular salsa bands in New York.
