During the reign of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth was born as the first daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York. Elizabeth became queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries when her father died in February 1952: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. A constitutional monarch, Queen Elizabeth has navigated through major political changes like the Troubles in Northern Ireland, devolution in the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom's membership in the European Community, the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, Canadian patriation, and the decolonisation of Africa during her reign. Between 1956 and 1992, the number of her realms varied as territories gained independence, and as realms, including South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (renamed Sri Lanka), became republics. Five popes have visited her or met with her, including a state visit to the Republic of Ireland. A number of significant events have taken place in her lifetime, including her coronation in 1953, her Golden Jubilee celebration in 1977, and her Diamond Jubilee celebration in 2012. In 2017, she became the first British monarch to reach a Sapphire Jubilee. Prince Philip, who had been married to her for over 73 years, passed away at the age of 99 on April 9th, 2021.
