Your voice is like your fingerprints - totally unique to you. Even if you have the same accent as other people around you, or use the same kind of expressions when you speak, everyone who knows you can identify you straight away just from the sound of your voice.

The difference between your fingerprints and your voice is that you don't have to do anything with your fingerprints to make the most of them. They are always 100 per cent effective just as they are. Not so with your voice. You (like everyone else) start off with the naturally free and easy voice that your genes give you. Anyone who's ever heard a baby cry knows what a mighty punch that 'little' voice can pack.

How life can affect your speaking voice

But another difference is that what happens around you or to you has no effect on your fingerprints. (Unless your hands get seriously injured, of course.) How you speak, on the other hand, is very much affected by what happens to you in life. On a very simple level, just being raised in one culture rather than another will dramatically influence how you sound. But that is far from the only thing that can change how you speak.

As you grow up in the world, you cannot help being influenced by the people around you and how they treat you. If you live in a stressful or unwelcoming environment, for example, you might become fearful of speaking out and being heard. Or you might unconsciously pick up vocal patterns that actually make your speaking voice less effective.

But whatever happened in the past, your voice is not doomed to remain weak, thin, or stifled. You can begin to develop it into the rich, compelling, powerful instrument of communication nature intended you to have.
