Palm Kiosk allows you to configure which apps are visible and accessible from your home screen. Unapproved apps will not be allowed to open without unlocking the kiosk with a pin number. Palm Kiosk is a simple, open-source, and free alternative to other solutions that do not fully lock down a device or have expensive subscription plans. Palm Kiosk has no ads and it does not collect or submit any data at all.
This app was designed by Last Mile Health, a non-profit organization working to save lives in the world’s most remote areas. Last Mile Health’s vision is a health worker for everyone, everywhere, every day. While this app was originally designed for community health work, Palm Kiosk is a great open-source solution for many other business, parenting, and recreational needs.
The Kiosk has two modes: LOCKED and UNLOCKED. When unlocked, the administrator can change which apps the user can view, can organize those apps, lock the kiosk, change the password, and exit the application. When locked, Palm Kiosk overlays the user’s operating system home screen. Only apps which have been allowed can be opened. Any Android feature that has not been approved (such as the camera) will not open normally even if launched from an approved application.
To use the app, set Palm Kiosk as the “home application” in the Android device’s “Home settings” in the settings menu. To exit the app, you will need to go to settings/home and select your Android device’s home application.
The app will initially launch in unlocked mode. Click the lock icon in the lower right corner to open the app’s settings menu. The default password is 1234.
If you forget the password, you will need to boot the device in safe mode, switch the default home application, and reset the application. Booting into safe-mode can be prevented, which makes the app more secure. To do this, follow the instructions here:
