La oración, es la elevación de la mente y el corazón a Dios y juega un papel esencial en la vida de un católico devoto. Sin una vida de oración cristiana, nos arriesgamos a perder la gracia de nuestras almas, la gracia que nos llega por primera vez en el bautismo y luego a través de los otros sacramentos y a través de la propia oración (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, 2565).
A través de la oración cristiana entramos en la presencia de la Trinidad que habita en nosotros. La oración nos permite adorar a Dios, reconociendo su poder omnipotente; la oración católica nos permite expresar nuestro agradecimiento, nuestras peticiones, y nuestro dolor por el pecado delante de nuestro Señor y Dios.
A partir de las palabras de Cristo, los escritos de la Escritura y de los santos y la guía del Espíritu Santo, se nos provee de oraciones basadas en la tradición cristiana. Además, nuestras oraciones espontáneas, informales, tanto orales como de meditación, son la fuente de la vida espiritual de todos los católicos. Sin el Espíritu Santo hablando a través de la Iglesia y por medio de sus santos, no sabríamos orar como conviene (CIC, 2650).
La Iglesia nos enseña que debemos orar no sólo directamente a Dios, también a los que están cerca de Dios, aquellos que tienen el poder para interceder en nuestro favor. De hecho, oramos a los ángeles para que nos ayuden y velen por nosotros; oramos a los santos en el cielo para pedir su intercesión y asistencia; oramos a la Madre Santísima por su ayuda.
Les rogamos no sólo en nuestro propio nombre, sino también en nombre de las almas en el purgatorio y de aquellos hermanos de la tierra que están en necesidad. La oración cristiana nos une a Dios; al hacerlo, estamos unidos a los demás miembros del Cuerpo Místico.
La oración católica a menudo requiere que se ore en compañía de otros. Cristo mismo nos anima a orar juntos: "Porque donde dos o más se reúnen en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos" (Mateo 18:20.).

Prayer is the raising of the mind and heart to God and plays an essential role in the life of a devout Catholic. The Church teaches us to pray directly to God not only, also those who are close to God, those who have the power to intercede on our behalf. In fact, we pray to the angels to help us and ensure us; pray to the saints in heaven to ask for her intercession and assistance; pray to the Blessed Mother for her help.
We ask not only on our own behalf but also on behalf of the souls in purgatory and those brothers of the earth who are in need. Christian prayer unites us to God; in doing so, we are united with other members of the Mystical Body.
Catholic prayer to be prayed often required in the company of others. Christ himself encourages us to pray together: "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst" (Matthew 18:20.).
