Musik Al Arabia berakar dari pembacaan puisi pada Masa Pra Islam yang disebut sebagai Masa Jahiliyah. Informasi mengenai hal ini sangat sedikit, namun dipercaya pada masa Abad V hingga VII. Pembacaan
puisi pada masa itu disebut shu`ara' al-Jahiliyah (شعراء الجاهلية) atau "Puisi Jahiliah", yang merupakan pembacaan puisi dengan suara tinggi dan irama tertentu.[1]
Musik pada waktu itu mempunyai peranan penting dalam Mistik, Sihir, dan Jin (mahluk halus). Alat musik seperti Rebana, Gambus, dan Rebab. Ciptaan musik pada waktu itu adalah sangat sederhana, yaitu membaca tangga nada Arab yang disebut Maqam.

Sedangkan tangga nada yang dipakai adalah yang disebut maqam (jamak: maqamat), yaitu susunan nada-nada yang tidak ditala sempuna (well tempered) seperti halnya musik barat. Sifat dari monofonik ini terlihat pada musik qasidah yang berupa nyanyian tunggal iringan rabana, jadi melodi hanya dengan iringan pukulan irama.
