Cikal bakal Deep Purple merupakan kreasi dari Jon Lord yang sebelumnya bermain untuk The Flowerpot Man bersama rekan pemusik lainnya, Chris Curtis, dan seorang pengusaha yang mencoba menjadi produser musik, Tony Edwards.
