Definisi Salaf (السَّلَفُ)
Menurut bahasa (etimologi), Salaf ( اَلسَّلَفُ ) artinya yang terdahulu (nenek moyang), yang lebih tua dan lebih utama.[1] Salaf berarti para pendahulu. Jika dikatakan (سَلَفُ الرَّجُلِ) salaf seseorang, maksudnya kedua orang tua yang telah mendahuluinya.[2]
Menurut istilah (terminologi), kata Salaf berarti generasi pertama dan terbaik dari ummat (Islam) ini, yang terdiri dari para Sahabat, Tabi’in, Tabi’ut Tabi’in dan para Imam pembawa petunjuk pada tiga kurun (generasi/masa) pertama yang dimuliakan oleh Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, sebagaimana sabda Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam :
خَيْرُ النَّاسِ قَرْنِيْ ثُمَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَلُوْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَلُوْنَهُمْ.
“Sebaik-baik manusia adalah pada masaku ini (yaitu masa para Sahabat), kemudian yang sesudahnya (masa Tabi’in), kemudian yang sesudahnya (masa Tabi’ut Tabi’in).”[3]
Menurut al-Qalsyani: “Salafush Shalih adalah generasi pertama dari ummat ini yang pemahaman ilmunya sangat dalam, yang mengikuti petunjuk Nabi Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dan menjaga Sunnahnya. Allah memilih mereka untuk menemani Nabi-Nya Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallamdan menegak-kan agama-Nya…”[4]

According to the language (etymology), Salaf (السلف) means that the previous (ancestors), the older and more mainstream. [1] Salaf means predecessors. If it is said (سلف الرجل) salaf someone, meaning both parents who had preceded him. [2]
According to the terms (terminology), the word Salaf means the first generation and the best of the Ummah (Islamic), which consists of the Sahaba, Tabi'in, Tabi 'al-Tabi'in and the Imams carrier instructions on the three-period (generation / future) first are honored by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, as the words of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam:
خير الناس قرني ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم.
"The best man was in my time (ie time of the Companions), then the subsequent (Tabi'in period), then the subsequent (Tabi 'al-Tabi'in period)." [3]
According to al-Qalsyani: "Salafush Salih is the first generation of this ummah are very deep understanding of science, which follows the instructions of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam and keep the sunnah. God chose them to accompany His Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa-kan sallamdan straightened his religion ... "[4]
