Once upon a time there were brother and sister who lived with their stepmother. She beat them every day and left them nothing to eat, so they decided to leave and find another place to live.

They travelled all of the next day. Then they came to a big forest, and they were so tired that they climbed up into a tall tree and fell asleep.

Their wicked stepmother was also a witch and she knew that the two children had run away. So she sneaked after them and cast a spell on all the streams in the forest.

In the morning, the children found a small stream and the boy was going to drink from it but his sister heard it say, "Who drinks of me, a tiger will be!" So the brother refrained from drinking.

When they came to a second stream, the sister heard it say, "Who drinks of me, a fawn will be!" But it was too late, her brother had already drunk the water and become a fawn.

The sister wept over her poor lost brother and the fawn wept also. Then she took off her her golden belt, tied it around the fawn's neck and they went deeper into the forest.

Finally, they came to a little house and the maiden looked inside. As it was empty, she thought, "We might as well live here." And they lived a long while in the wilderness, all alone.

Now it happened that the King of that country was holding a great hunt in the forest. The fawn heard the hunt and did not want to be caught by them. His sister said, “So that I know you when you knock on the door, you must say, ‘Little sister, let me in.’”

When the hunters saw the fawn, they chased after him. They followed him to the little house and heard him call out, "Little sister, let me in.”

When the door opened, the King hastily pushed into the house and, there before him, stood a maiden more beautiful than any he had ever seen.

The King looked kindly on her, and said, "Will you go with me to my castle and be my dear wife?"
"Oh yes," answered the maiden, "but the fawn must come too. I cannot leave him."

The King lifted the beautiful maiden onto his horse and carried her to his castle where the wedding was held with great ceremony. The fawn was well looked after and lived freely in the castle garden.

When the wicked stepmother heard that the brother and sister were now very happy, her heart was filled with jealousy.

After a short while the Queen gave birth and brought a beautiful boy into the world. The old witch put a spell on the Queen which kept her hidden in a secret place deep in the forest and only allowed her to visit the castle for a short time at midnight.

When the King returned and saw that his wife has gone, he ordered his guards to go out and find her.

Every night, the Queen came in. She fed her child and tenderly stroked the fawn’s back. Then, in silence, she left through the door.

The child’s nurse always saw her. She went to the King and told him everything. The King said, "Oh, heaven! I myself will stay by the child tomorrow night."

When the Queen appeared again, the King rushed towards her and said, "You are no other than my dear wife!" The Queen explained everything and told him where she was being held prisoner each day.

The next day, the King and his guards went to free the Queen and arrested the wicked stepmother.

The witch was forced to remove her evil spell from the fawn and he turned back into a human. The sister and brother then lived happily ever after.
