Judo is a modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan.
The objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground or immobilize him, was created as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy in Japan, it's most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke.
Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo.
Judo means 'the gentle way', referring to techniques which involve giving way to the force of one’s opponent. In practice, however, Judo is an intense physical sport and powerful means of self defense.
Judo techniques include throws, falls, and grappling moves such as pins, chokes, and arm locks. Judo does not involve kicking, punching, or striking and does not use weapons or equipment. Rather, two individuals use balance, power, movement, and gripping of the opponent’s judo uniform or judogi to try to subdue one another. Mastery of judo techniques takes considerable time, effort, and energy and involves rigorous physical and mental training.
. Throwing Techniques (Nage-Waza) : is a Japanese term for a grappling technique that involves off balancing or lifting an opponent, and throwing them to the ground. Throws usually involve a pulling and rotating motion, the practitioner performing the throw usually stays balanced on their feet standing techniques (tachi-waza).
However regularly when performing the throw both fighters finish on the ground. Certain throwing techniques called sacrifice throws (sutemi-waza) involve putting oneself in a potentially unfavorable position, such as on the ground, in order to execute a throw.
. gripping (Kumi kata): A standard right handed grip is where tori holds ukes right lapel mid way above belt level with their right hand, thumb uppermost, while the left hand holds the sleeve below ukes elbow.
From the standard grip a judoka can adopt a variety of grips, bearing in mind that penalties are given for non standard grips, where the technique is not executed immediately, holding the trouser leg, belt or same side of the jacket with both hands.
. provoke a reaction from uke (Feint): This combination requires tori to make an action which sets up uke for a certain throw while actually moving into another. The feint must be convincing, otherwise the essential element of surprise will be lost.
Another way a feint can be used is for tori just to push or pull forwards, backwards or to the side.
Uke’s reaction is normally to resist in the opposite direction to which they are being pushed or pulled, often coming off balance in the process. Tori then switches to a second technique, normally in the direction of uke’s movement.
. combination (Renzoku-waza): Standing techniques used in a combination or moving from standing into groundwork, it is a simple combination of two different groups of techniques.
The second technique is a continuation of the first carried out in a same or similar direction.
. counter attack (Kaeshi-waza): Uke can keep the action flowing to their own advantage, as well as conserving energy.
The counter attack needs to be a technique that moves along the same line of force as that of the original attack. There are two instances when tori is most vulnerable. The first is the split second they being to turn in on uke.
The second is when tori has completed the turn in but failed to complete the technique and begins to turn out again.
. making contact (Tsukuri): The art of combining body, arm and leg movements into the correct position for whichever attacking technique has been decided upon. Move your body into a throwing position, still keeping uke off balance.
The circular movement on your feet which brings you into a good position is called Tai-sabaki.
