Jujutsu (Japanese: 柔 術, jūjutsu, also jujitsu, ju jutsu, ju jitsu, or jiu jitsu) is the name of some kind of martial art flow from Japan. It is not correct to say that Ju-Jitsu refers to a single martial art course.

Jujutsu is basically defensive forms of defense and utilizes "Yawara-gi" or flexible techniques, where the attack of the opponent is not faced with strength, but by "deceiving" the opponent so that the attack power can be used to defeat himself. From this Jujutsu martial art, born some other martial arts that have similar defensive concepts, namely Aikido and Judo, both also from Japan.

Jujutsu consists of various streams (Ryuha), but on the outline is divided into two "styles", namely traditional and modern. The movements of these two "styles" of Jujutsu are almost identical, but modern Jujutsu moves are adapted to modern defensive situations, whereas traditional Jujutsu moves usually reflect defensive situations when the Jujutsu flow is created. For example, the Jujutsu created at the time of Sengoku Jidai (before the Tokugawa Shogun in power) emphasized the fighting on the battlefield by wearing armor (called Yoroi Kumi Uchi), while those created in the Edo period (after the Tokugawa Shogunate) emphasized martial arts by wearing everyday clothes (Suhada Jujutsu).

The Jujutsu techniques outline the atemi waza (attacking the weak part of the opposing body), kansetsu waza / gyakudori (locking the opponent's joints) and the nage waza (dropping the opponent). Each Jujutsu stream has its own way of doing the techniques mentioned above. These techniques were born from the methods of self-defense of the Samurai (war soldiers of ancient times) when they lost their swords, or did not want to use their swords (for example because they did not want to hurt or kill the opponent).
