WHAT IS A M3U8 FILE?
A M3U8 file is an executable file format. It is basically a playlist containing UTF-8 encoded text that is directed to video files. The M3U8 file format is a de facto standard playlist format suitable for carrying lists of media file URLs.

Like a mRSS metadata file, M3U8 is the format used as the index file for HTTP Live Streaming. For details, see IETF Internet-Draft of the HTTP Live Streaming specification, if you are not in a hurry!
