The Siberian Husky (Russian: Сибирский хаски) is a medium size, dense-coat working dog breed that originated in north-eastern Siberia.[2] The breed belongs to the Spitz genetic family.[3] It is recognizable by its thickly furred double coat, erect triangular ears, and distinctive markings.

The Siberian Husky’s origins can be traced to the ancient Chukchi - an ancient tribe whose culture was based on the long-distance sled dog sled dogs located near the Kolyma River Basin in Northern Siberia.[4] Huskies are a very active, energetic, and resilient breed whose ancestors came from the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Siberian Arctic.

The dogs were imported into Nome, Alaska by William Goosak, a Russian fur trader during the Nome Gold Rush and later spread into the United States and Canada. Goosak imported a team of Siberian Huskies to enter the 1909 All Alaska Sweepstakes Race of 408 miles with a first place prize of $10,000. The people of Nome referred to the Siberian Huskies as "Siberian Rats" due to size and weighing 40 to 50 pounds when compared to the malamute dogs.[5]

They were initially sent to Alaska and Canada as sled dogs, but rapidly acquired the status of family pets and show dogs.
