† Who is Hiroshige?
Utagawa Hiroshige, 歌川広重, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was born in 1797 and became best-known as author of the Landscape series such as The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidōand(富嶽三十六景) and The One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景). His paintings inspired a number of Western artists, including Vincent van Gogh, to experiment with imitations of Japanese methods.
