Heavy metal (or just metal) is a music genre under rock music which originated sometime in the latter part of the 1960s and early part of the 1970s, predominantly in the United States and the United Kingdom. Heavy metal music was characterized by a “thick, massive sound” with deeply-amplified guitar sound distortions, emphatic beats, extended guitar solo portions, dense bass-and-drum sound, as well as thorough loudness. Metal sub-genres differ by altering, omitting, or emphasizing any of these elements. The lyrics and performance styles of heavy metal music is often attributed with machismo, aggression, and masculinity.
