******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Flamenco music is a type of Spanish folk music and dance from the Andalusian region of southern Spain. Its forms of expression includes toque (guitar playing), cante (singing), palmas (handclaps) and baile (dance). Flamenco has been reportedly recorded as far back as 1774 and experienced a dramatic degree of growth sometime in the latter part of the 19th century. Flamenco is usually attributed to the Gitanos or the Romani people of Spain (a certain number of popular flamenco artists come from this ethnicity).

The root of the musical term “flamenco” has been uncertain until now -- it has only been recorded as a dance and musical term in the latter part of the 18th century. “Flamenco” as a Spanish word means “flamingo” which refers to being “flame-colored” and the flamingo bird itself. The Spanish word itself also referred to the word “Flemish” which means “something or someone related to Flanders”. Courtiers of Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire (Carlos I of Spain) wore colorful dresses and were renowned for their florid displays of courtesy and boisterous conduct.

In more recent years, Flamenco has reached a degree of popularity across the world. In fact, Japan is one country where there is more established Flamenco academies than in its native homeland of Spain. Back in November 2010, it was proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”
