The Eclipse Megamovie Mobile app links you to a unique citizen-science project investigating the eclipse of August 21, 2017. The app helps you take great pictures of this once-in-a-lifetime event and contribute images and data to solar scientists.

August 21, 2017 will be the first time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the continental United States since 1979 - and the first time an eclipse is visible only in the US since 1776.

The Eclipse Megamovie Mobile app from Ideum and the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley brings you into a nationwide citizen-science project and helps you view and photograph this incredible event.

The Megamovie Project (https://eclipsemega.movie) consists of scientists who study eclipses and what they reveal about our sun. When you use the app and provide your permission, the images you take, and the time and location data they’re associated with, are sent to scientists, creating a massive dataset of eclipse observations from around the country.

But Eclipse Megamovie Mobile does much more than that.

Taking good photos of astronomical events requires a steady hand and precise control of exposure time and sensitivity. Megamovie Mobile helps you take tack-sharp photos of the eclipse with your smartphone and provides information about mounting your phone on a tripod, adding an external lens, or using a DSLR.

The app also gives you information about the best route from your location to the eclipse’s path, a countdown clock ticking down to the big event, and a built-in practice mode to get used to setting up your phone or camera for great pictures. And if you use a DSLR to capture images of the eclipse, those images may become part of a stunning crowd-sourced eclipse movie created by Google.
