Prima dell’attuale edificio rinascimentale, sorgevano in questo luogo tre chiese, edificate a partire dal IV secolo e dedicate a Cristo Salvatore, a san Giovanni Battista e alla Vergine Maria.

Demolite le tre chiese preesistenti, la cattedrale fu ricostruita tra il 1491 e il 1498 per volontà del cardinale Domenico della Rovere, vescovo di Torino. I lavori furono affidati ad Amedeo da Settignano detto Meo del Caprina, che portò in Piemonte le nuove forme del Rinascimento.

Torino, divenuta la capitale del Ducato Sabaudo nel 1563, accolse la Sindone nel 1578. Demolendo l’abside della cattedrale rinascimentale, fu costruita una straordinaria cappella per custodirla. La cupola della Cappella della Sindone, progettata da Guarino Guarini.

Nella notte tra l’11 e il 12 aprile 1997, la Cappella della Sindone venne devastata da un furioso incendio che divampò tra i ponteggi di un restauro. La Sindone scampò alla distruzione perché era in quel momento custodita nel coro della cattedrale, all’esterno della cappella.
