The Science Behind Dr. Heartbreak
When relationships end and you’re suffering from heartbreak, the emotional pain you feel can be extremely sharp. Studies have found that even very mild rejections can cause heartache and emotional pain. Certainly, getting dumped or going through a breakup can cause real anguish. But what can you do to make your heartbreak less intense and your emotional recovery go more quickly?
The real issue is not just what you can and should do to heal but also, what you shouldn’t do to make things worse. It turns out, getting dumped and having heartache makes us do a lot of things that set us back and delay our recovery. For example, idealizing the person who caused us the heartbreak in the first place. It is common, when we are heartbroken, to think of how great they were and how great things could be if we were with them. But doing that only makes the rejection and the heartbreak hurt more.
Dr. Heartbreak tries to communicate that there are steps brokenhearted people can take to heal and other steps they can take to avoid the mistakes that will set them back and it is important for brokenhearted people to keep both of those factors in mind.
