La Bula «Qua Iuxta Apostolicum Effatum», del 2 de diciembre de 1913, mediante la cual Su Santidad San Pío X crea la Provincia Eclesiástica de Nicaragua, haciendo independiente la Diócesis de León de
la Arquidiócesis de Guatemala, al mismo tiempo crea la Arquidiócesis de Managua, la Diócesis de Granada y el Vicariato Apostólico de Bluefields segregándolos del territorio de la Diócesis de León.
Esa misma Bula establecía que el Arzobispo de Managua Debía tener un Obispo Auxiliar con sede en Matagalpa, dada la importancia que la Santa Sede concedía a este territorio.
Mediante la Bula «Animarum Salutis» , del 19 de diciembre de 1924, Su Santidad el Papa Pío XII eregía la Diócesis de Matagalpa segregando su territorio de la Arquidiócesis de Managua, de la cual, no obstante, sería Diócesis Sufragánea, como lo continua siendo.
