Diabetes is a set of metabolic disorders, the main common feature of which is the presence of persistently or chronic elevated glucose levels in the blood, due either to a defect in insulin production, to a resistance to insulin action to use glucose, an increase in glucose production, or a combination of these causes. It is also accompanied by abnormalities in the metabolism of lipids, proteins, mineral salts and electrolytes.

Diabetes is associated with the appearance of complications in many organ systems, the most obvious being loss of vision that can lead to blindness, involvement of the kidneys with progressive functional deterioration, requiring dialysis and transplantation. The involvement of blood vessels that can mean loss of lower extremities, heart compromise with coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction, cerebral compromise and intestinal irrigation; however, the most prevalent complications affect the peripheral and autonomic nervous system. All this means a very heavy burden for the patient who suffers from it and for the entire public health system.

The main symptoms of diabetes mellitus are excessive urine output (polyuria), abnormal increase in need of eating (polyphagia), increased thirst (polydipsia), and weight loss for no apparent reason. Occasionally, these three symptoms (polyuria, polyphagia, and polydipsia or 3 P rule) are taken as a reference in order to suspect type 2 or insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus, since they are the most common in the population.
