Canto da Araponga

A araponga é uma ave existente no Brasil e também no Paraguai e Argentina,
produz som parecido ao de um martelo numa bigorna. As arapongas pertencem à família Cotingidae, género Procnias.

A araponga é conhecida em todo o Brasil pelo seu grito alto e estridente.
Em outras regiões do país, ela é conhecida por guiraponga, ferreiro ou ferrador,
sendo que esses dois últimos nomes vêm do seu grito, que imita com perfeição o trabalho de um ferreiro,
primeiramente com uma lima e a seguir com a batida estridente de um martelo sobre a bigorna.
O nome araponga é indígena e vem de ara (ave) e ponga (soar).
A araponga do sudeste e sul,
a Procnias nudicollis é ave famosa e infelizmente perseguida pelo trafico de aves o que faz com que tenha suas populações reduzidas.
É considerada A voz da mata atlântica devido
a habitar essa floresta e ser mencionada pelos primeiros viajantes e naturalistas que visitaram
o Brasil nos séculos XIX e XVIII. Também é considerada como ave nacional do Paraguai.
Sua preservação, portanto, adquire importância até mesmo cultural.

Três espécies de arapongas são encontradas no Brasil:

a Araponga (Procnias nudicollis), que é a mais encontradiça, mas, não sendo, porém, comum,
habitando desde matas litorâneas da Bahia e Alagoas até o Rio Grande do Sul. O macho é todo branco,
com a garganta e os lados da cabeça esverdeados, e a fêmea é totalmente esverdeada.
também a Araponga-do-nordeste (Procnias averano) que vive em Roraima e no Nordeste,
onde se torna cada vez mais rara por causa da derrubada das matas, seu habitat natural e,
principalmente, devido ao trafico de aves.
Alguns ecologistas e entidades preservacionistas estão tentando a preservação desta espécie.
As asas são pretas, o peito é branco,
cabeça marrom e vários apêndices carnudos que "nascem" do seu pescoço como se fossem barba,
de onde vem seu nome popular de "araponga-de-barbela".
