The Spiration Valve System (SVS) is an innovative technology that offers for patients with severe emphysema (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD) a customized, minimally invasive lung volume reduction treatment option with a favorable risk-benefit profile. This application demonstrates the clinical application of intrabronchial valve treatment with a focus on patient selection in emphysema treatment.
SVS valve treatment is a promising approach for treating a diseased lung in emphysematous patients or a damaged lung resulting in air leaks. The patented one-way SVS valve is a device placed in selected lung airways where it self-expands and limits the airflow to the occluded areas of the lung while still allowing mucus and trapped air to pass by outside of the valve in the proximal direction.
Engineered for Airway Management
Inspired by aerodynamics, the Spiration Valve redirects air away from diseased or damaged lung to healthier tissue, all while allowing trapped air and secretions to escape, so that patients may breathe easier. Unlike a stent, the unique design of the Spiration Valve minimizes contact with the bronchial wall, maintains position to redirect air even in complex patients, and facilitates easy removal when needed. The valve consists of a Nitinol frame covered with a polymer membrane and five anchors that securely engage the airway walls at the targeted treatment location.
