The body mass index (BMI) is a measure of the human body shape based on the weight and height of an individual who is used to classify into several categories. The World Health Organization (WHO ) classifies individuals into underweight, normal , overweight and obesity, including several subcategories.
BMI is useful because overweight and obesity have increased risk of various diseases : diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, dyslipidemia , coronary heart disease and some cancers.
BMI values for adults are age-independent and the same for both sexes. However, BMI may not correspond to the same degree of obesity in different populations due , in part, to different body proportions.
