શ્રીમદ્ ભગવદ્ ગીતા એ હઠંદુ ધર્મનો પ્રાચીન અને મુખ્ય પવઠત્ર ગ્રંથ છે. ગીતા હઠંદુ ધર્મ ગણાતો હોવા છત્તા એ ફક્ત હઠંદુ પ્રત્યે સઠમીત ન રહેતા પુરા માનવસમાજ માટેનો ગ્રંથ ગણાય છે અને વઠશ્વચઠંતકોએ તેમાંથી માર્ગદર્શન લીધુ છે. ગીતા માનવને - પૃથ્વીના પુત્રને સંબોધીને કહી છે. હઠંદુ ધર્મનાં ઘણા ધર્મગ્રંથો છે પરંતુ ગીતાનું મહત્વ અલૌકઠક છે. ગીતાને સ્મૃતઠ ગ્રંથ માનવામાં આવે છે.
ગીતામાં કુલ ૧૮ અધ્યાય અને ૭૦૦ સંસ્કૃત શ્લોકો છે. પુરી ગીતા થોડા શ્લોકોના અપવાદ સઠવાય અનુષ્ટુપ છંદમાં છે.
