Una arritmia es una alteración del ritmo cardiaco.
Este se divide en dos fases: diástole, el músculo cardiaco se relaja y la cavidad se llena de sangre, y sístole, el músculo se contrae y expulsa la sangre al torrente circulatorio, manteniendo el flujo sanguíneo y la presión arterial.
Este proceso ocurre de una manera regular y rítmica, al estar gobernado por un sistema eléctrico denominado sistema de excitación y conducción. Cuando se altera ese sistema, aparecen las arritmias o trastornos del ritmo cardiaco.
Existen dos grandes grupos de arritmias, las arritmias lentas o bradiarritmias y las arritmias rápidas o taquiarritmias. También se consideran arritmias los latidos prematuros o extrasístoles. Por su repetición, se pueden dividir en crónicas (permanentes) o paroxísticas (ocasiones puntuales).
