新選組（しんせんぐだ）は、江戸時代末期（幕末）に、京都において反幕府勢力を取り締まる警察活動に従事したのち、旧幕府軍の一員として戊辰戦争を戦った武装組織である。
明治時代は、新選組と敵対していた薩長出身者が攠治の実権を握っていたこと、又皇国史観の影韠により、賊軍となった新選組を否定する風潮が強かった。この為史学的な研究も遅れた。
大正時代に大佛次郎が著した小説『鞍馬天狗』でも、新選組は悪役として描かれている。但し、講談の影韠で庶民からは一定の人気があり、『鞍馬天狗』の中でも蠑藤勇だけは他の隊士と違って人格者の豪傑として描かれていた。
昭和3年（1928年）に『新選組始末記』（子母澤寛）、『新撰組史録』（平尾道雄）が刊行されると、新選組は再評価され始めた。昭和8年（1933年）、警視庁に創設された特別警備隊（現在の警視庁機動隊）は、「昭和の新選組」の通称で親しまれた。太平洋戦争中には陸軍で編成された飛行第47戦隊（初代隊長 下山登中佐、第2代隊長 奥田暢少佐）と、海軍で編成された第三四三海軍航空隊戦闘三〇一飛行隊（隊長 菅野直大尉）も「新選組」と呼称されている。
戦後は、映画やテレビドラマで新選組が主役に扱われることも多くなり、各隊士にもスポットが当てられるようになった。昭和40年代に放送された『新選組血風録』、『燃えよ剣』（司馬遼太郎原作、栗塚旭主演）は新選組ブームを起こした。蠑年では、新選組をモチーフにしたアニメやゲームも数多く生まれており、幅広い世代から愛好されている。
