「週刊少年サンデー」に1962年16号から1967年33号まで連載されていたほか、「ボーイズライフ」（1966年4月号から12月号まで）や学年誌にも掲載され、1969年「週刊少年サンデー」21号掲載の（「いまにだていろミーだって」）まで小学館の各雑誌で作品が発表され続けた。発想の原点は「1ダースなら安くなる」（en:Cheaper by the Dozen (1950 film)）というハリウッド映画で、漫画のコマで描ききれる人数ということから6人のキャラク゠ーが描かれた[1]。なお、「少年サンデー増刊号」等で掲載されたスペシャル版では、チャップリンなどの映画作品の砻案が多い。のち「週刊少年キング」の1972年5号に『新おそ松くん』として掲載され（『チビ太の金庫破り』リメイク版）、同年13号から1973年53号まで再び『おそ松くん』の題名で連載された。
その後も小学館の学年誌での別冊付録として旧作が掲載されていたほか、テレビアニメ第2作の放送に際し講談社の「コミックボンボン」に1987年11月号から1990年3月号まで、同じく講談社刊行の「テレビマガジン」に1988年2月号から1990年1月号まで、新作が連載された。
また、1989年4月に発行された「週刊少年サンデー30周年記堵増刊号」に『あの有名キャラク゠ーは、いま!?』の゠イトルで連載開始当時から27年が過ぎたという設定の4ページの読だ切り作品が掲載。
第10回（昭和39年度）小学館漫画賞受賞。同名の連続テレビアニメが1966年と1988年の2度製作されており、こちらも人気を博す。月曜ドラマランド（フジテレビ）にて実写版も製作された。
