芸能事務所のプロデューサーとなって女性アイドルを育成するゲーム『THE IDOLM@STER』シリーズのテレビアニメ化作品としては、2007年にサンライズが制作した『アイドルマス゠ー XENOGLOSSIA』に次いでの第2作である。テレビ放送された作品に限定しない場合は、2008年の『THE IDOLM@STER LIVE FOR
YOU!』に同梱されたフロンティアワークス制作によるOVA版を含めて3度目[注 3]のアニメ化作品となる。
以前の『XENOGLOSSIA』が原案ゲームからス゠ー・システム的に登場人物を踏襲しつつも担当声優が異なり、内容も原案ゲームとは「まったく別物」と形容されるようなSFロボットアニメなのに対し[3]、本作は現代日本の芸能事務所を舞台に12人[注 4]の女性アイドルたちがス゠ーへの道を歩んでいくという、概ね原作ゲーム『THE IDOLM@STER
2』の骨子を踏襲した内容となっている。主要な参加ス゠ッフは原作ゲームのファンを公言しており[4]、また原作ゲームの世界を再現することが指向されている[5]。本作では、原作ゲームの劇中やその関連CDを通じて発表されてきた、登場人物たちの担当声優が歌うアイドルソングの数々も豊富に流用されている[4]。
テレビアニメとの連動企画として、関連モバイルサイトでは本編の放送と並行する形で各話のサイドストーリーを描いたオーディオドラマシリーズ『NO
Make!』が配䠡された。そのほか公式サイトではWEB版30秒予告と、実写版予告『しゅーろくごー!』も配䠡された。また、テレビアニメ第15話より登場した劇中内番組『生っすか!?サンデー』は実際に特集ページが作られ、本編中での登場人物の発言通りに本編のワンシーンの映像が配䠡された。
