มหาเมตตาใหญ่ หลวงพ่อจรัญ

พระธรรมสิงหบุราจารย์ (หลวงพ่อจรัญ ฐิตธมฺโม) วัดอัมพวัน จ.สิงห์บุรี ซึ่งท่าน ได้มาจากเทวดาสอนแม่ชี แม่ชีนำมาบอกหลวงพ่ออีกต่อหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีเนื้อความตรงกับ ของสมเด็จพระสังฆราช (แพ ติสฺโส) แต่ท่านมักเรียกว่า เมตตาใหญ่, มหาเมตตาใหญ่ หรือ เมตตาครอบจักรวาล หมายถึง บทสวดที่แผ่เมตตาไปถึงสัตว์ทุกชีวิตทุกตัวตน ทั่วทั้งจักรวาลไม่มีจำกัด

คาถามหาเมตตาใหญ่ นี้ เป็นบทบันทึกเรื่องราวและบทพระธรรมเทศนาที่สำคัญตอนหนึ่งของพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งถูกจารึกไว้ในพระไตรปิฎกเล่มที่ 31 หน้า 341 ชื่อ เมตตากถา มีเนื้อความโดยย่อว่า สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเสด็จประทับ ณ วัดพระเชตวันมหาวิหาร ที่อนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐีสร้างถวาย ครั้งนั้น ได้ตรัสเรียกพระภิกษุทั้งหลายให้ประชุมกันแล้วตรัสพระธรรมเทศนาโปรด พระธรรมเทศนาที่ยกขึ้นแสดงในครั้งนั้นมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการเจริญเมตตากรรมฐานโดยในเบื้องต้นทรงแสดงอานิสงส์ของการแผ่เมตตาว่า ผู้เจริญเมตตาจะได้รับอนิสงส์มากมายถึง 11 ประการ จากนั้นจึงทรงจำแนกการแผ่เมตตาออกเป็น 3 ประเภท
1. อโนธิสผรณา คือ การแผ่ไปโดยไม่เจาะจงผู้รับ แผ่ไปโดยไม่ระบุลักษณะผู้รับว่าเป็นใคร อยู่ที่ไหน เพศอะไรหรือมีลักษณะเป็นอย่างไร คือแผ่ไปโดยใช้คำกลาง ๆ ที่ครอบคลุมสัตว์ทุกประเภท เช่นคำว่า สัตตา (สัตว์ทั้งหลาย) ปาณา (สิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งหลาย) ภูตา (สัตว์ที่เกิดมีแล้วทั้งหลาย)
2. โอธิสผรณา คือ การแผ่ไปโดยเจาะจงผู้รับ แผ่ไปโดยระบุประเภท หรือลักษณะอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งของผู้รับ เช่น ระบุว่าแผ่เมตตาให้มนุษย์ เทวดา เปรต อสุรกาย หรือสัตว์นรก เป็นชายหรือหญิง เป็นต้น
3. การแผ่เมตตาไปในทิศทั้ง 10
จากนั้นจึงทรงแสดงคำแผ่เมตตาแต่ละประเภทโดยละเอียด และทรงเน้นย้ำให้พระภิกษุจดจำนำไปปฏิบัติอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ความพิเศษของคาถาเมตตาใหญ่นี้ ก็คือ เป็นธรรมเทศนาที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงยกขึ้นแสดงเอง โดยไม่มีเหตุต้องให้แสดง เช่น ไม่มีการพูดคุยหรือการสนทนาเกี่ยวกับการแผ่เมตตา ไม่มีผู้ทูลถาม เป็นต้น เพราะโดยส่วนมากการแสดงธรรมของพระพุทธองค์จะต้องมีเหตุการณ์ให้ต้องแสดง การที่ทรงยกขึ้นแสดงเองเช่นนี้ ย่อมเป็นพระธรรมเทศนาที่ทรงให้ความสำคัญและเป็นประโยชน์อย่างยิ่ง บทแผ่เมตตานี้เป็นบทแผ่เมตตาที่ยาวที่สุดในบรรดาบทแผ่เมตตาอื่น ๆ จึงได้ชื่อว่า มหาเมตตาใหญ่

อานิสงส์ของการแผ่เมตตา พระพุทธเจ้าแสดงไว้ 11 ประการคือ
1. หลับเป็นสุข : คือการนอนหลับสบาย ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน พลิกตัวไปมา
2. ตื่นเป็นสุข : คือตื่นมาจิตใจแจ่มใส ปลอดโปร่ง ไม่เซื่องซึมมึนหัว
3. ไม่ฝันร้าย : คือ ฝันดี ฝันเห็นแต่สิ่งที่เป็นมงคล สิ่งที่ดีงาม
4. เป็นที่รักของมนุษย์ : คือ มีมนุษย์สัมพันธ์ดี จิตใจเบิกบาน ไม่โกรธง่าย มีเสน่ห์น่าเข้าใกล้
5. เป็นที่รักของอมนุษย์ : คือ เป็นที่รักของสัตว์ดิรัจฉาน ภูตผีปีศาจ
6. เทวดาย่อมคุ้มครองรักษา : เทวดาช่วยเหลือบันดาลให้สมหวังในสิ่งที่ต้องการ และป้องกันอันตรายที่จะเกิดขั้นให้ถอยห่าง
7. ไฟ ยาพิษ ศัสตรา ไม่อาจทำร้ายได้
8. เมื่อทำสมาธิ จิตจะสงบเร็ว
9. ใบหน้าผ่องใส
10. ไม่หลงตาย : คือ เมื่อถึงเวลาที่จะต้องตายก็ตายด้วยอาการสงบ มีสติ ไม่บ่นเพ้อ คร่ำครวญ ดิ้นทุรนทุราย
