بداية 1956 طلب عبان رمضان من مفدي زكريا أن يكتب نشيد وطني يعبر فيه عن الثورة الجزائرية.. وخلال يومين فقط جهز شاعر الثورة "قسماً بالنازلات الماحقات"؛ وهو من أقوى الأناشيد الوطنية في العالم، وانتقل شاعرنا، والذي مات منفياً بتونس؛ إلى تونس لنشره في صفوف جبهة التحرير. وفي العاصمة التونسية قام الموسيقار التونسي علي السرياتي بتلحينه، إلا أن لحن التريكي لم يكن في مستوى قوّة النشيد، وهو مادفع بمفدي زكريا؛ تنفيذاً لأمر عبان رمضان؛ بنقله معه إلى القاهرة لإعادة تلحينه من جديد، وقد تبرّع الموسيقار المصري محمد فوزي بتلحين النشيد "هدية للشعب الجزائري". واقتنعت أخيراً جبهة التحرير باللحن الجديد، واعتبرته قوياً وفي مستوى النشيد.
طالبت فرنسا بحذف مقطع يا فرنسا، لكن المجاهدين الجزائريين رفضوا لأنها لم تعترف بجرائمها المرتكبة في الجزائر وهو لا يزال مقطعا من النشيد الوطني الرسمي.
