يمتاز الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم عن غيره من القادة في كل زمان ومكان بميزتين مهمتين: الأولى؛ أنه كان قائداً عصامياً. والثانية، أن معاركه كانت للدفاع عن الدعوة ولحماية حرية نشر الإسلام ولتوطيد أركان
الإسلام لا للعدوان والإغتصاب والإستغلال. إن غيره من القادة العظام وجدوا أمما تؤيدهم وقوات جاهزة تساندهم؛ ولكن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم لم تكن له أمة تؤيده، ولا قوات تسانده، فعمل على نشر دعوته، وتحمل
أعنف المشقات والصعاب حتى كون له قوة بالتدرج ذات عقيدة واحدة وهدف واحد، هو التوحيد وإعلاء كلمة الله. وعلى ذلك يمكن تقسيم حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم من الناحية العسكرية إلى أربعة أدوار: دور الحشد،
ودور الدفاع عن العقيدة، ودور الهجوم، ودور التكامل. أما دور الحشد: فمن بعثته إلى هجرته إلى المدينة المنورة واستقراره هناك، وفي هذا الدور اقتصر الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم على الحرب الكلامية: يبشر وينذر
ويحاول جاهداً نشر الإسلام، وبذلك كون النواة الأولى لقوات المسلمين، وحشدهم في المدينة المنورة (بالهجرة) إليها، وعاهد بعض اليهود ليأمن جانبهم عند بدء الصراع. أما دور الدفاع عن العقيدة: فمن حين بدء
الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بإرسال سراياه وقواته للقتال، إلى إنسحاب الأحزاب عن المدينة المنورة بعد غزوة الخندق، وبهذا الدور إزواد عدد المسلمين، فاستطاعوا الدفاع عن عقيدتهم ضد أعدائهم الأقوياء. أما دور
الهجوم: فهو بعد غزوة (الخندق) إلى بعد غزوة (حنين)، وبهذا الدور انتشر الإسلام في الجزيرة العربية كلها، وأصبح المسلمون قوة ذات اعتبار وأثر في بلاد العرب، فإستطاعوا سحق كل قوة تعرضت للإسلام. والدور
الرابع هو دور التكامل: وهو من بعد غزوة (حنين) إلى أن التحق الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بالرفيق الأعلى؛ فقد تكاملت قوات المسلمين بهذا الدور، فشملت شبه الجزيرة العربية كلها، وأضنت تحاول أن تجدلها متنفساً
خارج شبه الجزيرة العربية، فكانت غزوة (تبوك) إيذاناً بمولد الإمبراطورية الإسلامية. بهذا التطور المنطقي، تدرج هذا القائد العصامي بقواته من الضعف إلى القوة، ومن الدفاع إلى الهجوم، ومن الهجوم إلى التمرض،
وبذلك بزّ كل قائد في كل أدوار التاريخ، لأنه أوجد قوة كبيرة ذات عقيدة واحدة وهدف واحد من لا شيء...
تلك هي الميزة الأولى للرسول القائد صلى الله عليه وسلم، والميزة الثانية لقيادته: فهي أن معاركه كانت حرب فروسية بكل معنى الكلمة؛ الغرض منها حماية حرية نشر الإسلام وتوطيد أركانه السلام، فلم ينقضْ
عهداً، ولم يمثّل بعدو، ولم يقتل ضعيفاً، ولم يقاتل غير المحاربين، لذلك فإن إطلاق تعبير: (الفتح الإسلامي) على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليس صحيحاً، وإنما الصحيح أن يقال: (إنتشار الإسلام) على عهد
رسول الله لأنه لم يفتح بلداً لغاية الفتح؛ بل بغرض حماية حرية نشر الإسلام فيه، وتوطيد أركان السلام في أرجائه. ولا عجب في ذلك، فقد كان محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم قائداً ورسولاً، مبشراً ونذيراً (وداعياً
إلى الله بإذنه وسراجاً منيراً).
