ظهرت موهبت ملحم بركات الموسيقيّة منذ كان تلميذًا في مدرسة بلدته كفرشيما. وكان يقوم بتلحين بعض الكلمات من الجريدة اليومية وقام بغنائها في إحدى المناسبات المدرسية. ويؤكّد ملحم بأنّ أول لحن وضعه كان نشيدًا لمدرستة في بلدة كفرشيما.وكان ملحم يستمتع بالغناء من جهة لعبد الوهاب، وأغاني أم كلثوم من جهة أخرى. اشتهر منذ صباه كمغنّ في بلدته، حتّى طُلب منه مرّة الغناء والعزف بين فصلَي مسرحية "جنفياف" التي كانت تُعرض في البلدة، فلفت انتباه الموسيقي حليم الرومي، الذي كان يسكن كفرشيما، فأثنى على موهبته وشجّعه. في مطلع شبابه طلب ملحم من والده ان يسمح له بدراسة الموسيقى، فكان جواب الأب:"هناك عبد الوهاب في الساحة وتريد ان تصبح فنانًا؟!" ومع ذلك ترك ملحم المدرسة وكان في السادسة عشرة من عمره، وقرر الالتحاق بالمعهد الوطني للموسيقى، فانتسب إليه دون معرفة أبيه، وكان يخبئ كتب المعهد في كيس ورقي يخفيه أمام مدخل منزله، إلى أن اكتشف والده الأمر، الذي عاد وقبل الأمر نظرًا لإصرار ابنه وموهبته الواعدة. درس ملحم النظريات الموسيقيّة والصولفاج والغناء الشرقي والعزف على آلة العود مدّة أربع سنوات في المعهد الوطني للموسيقى (الكونسرفاتوار)، وكان من بين أساتذته، سليم الحلو وزكي ناصيف وتوفيق الباشا.
