Сюжет заимствован из новеллы Хуана Мануэля, оРубликованной в 1335 году в Рервой части книги «Граф Луканор». Этот факт заРечатлён в дневнике Андерсена, в котором он уРоминает сборник новелл Карла фон Бюлова (нем.) в качестве источника истории.
